How To: Drill a Hole in Ceramic Tile

Drill a Hole in Ceramic Tile

Drilling holes in wall tiles is a fairly easy skill to master once you know how. Follow these simple steps on how to drill a hole in a tiled wall for a hassle free experience.

Please Note

Drilling a ceramic wall tile is a completely different experience to drilling a hole through a porcelain wall tile. Porcelain tiles are extremely hard and require a special drill bit to drill through the tile. This video is dealing only with drilling a hole through a 'ceramic tile'.

Before l go through the steps of how to drill a hole through a tile, here is the link l promised in the video relating to my other wall tiling video where l reveal my little known trade secret. Check it out!

Steps to How to Drill a Hole in a Wall Tile:

Step 1:

Work out where you want to drill your hole.

Step 2:

Apply masking tape (or painters tape) with an 'x' over where you want to drill your hole in the tile. With a pen or pencil, mark on the tape where you want the hole in the tile to be drilled.

Step 3:

Load up your cordless or corded drill with a carbide tipped masonry drill bit suitable to the size of the hole that is to be drilled.

Step 4:

Place the drill on the mark to be drilled and with gentle pressure and on slow speed commence drilling. Ensure that you let the drill work slowly rather than you forcing the drill which can crack the tile. Do not have your drill on the 'hammer' setting as that may crack the tile.

Step 5:

Continue to apply gentle pressure to the back of the drill making sure to slow up even more when you are about to break through the tile.

QUICK TIP

If the hole you're drilling is larger than about 6mm or ¼ inch l would suggest that you start off with a smaller pilot hole first. This will make the larger drill bit a lot easier to drill through the tile and you will reduce the risk of the tile cracking.

There you have it. It's as simple as that. Let me know how you go..
Cheers,
Uncle Knackers.
